Project: Kravis & Mayer Dormitories
Location: Deerfield, MA

Windigo designed two new dormitories for the campus at Eaglebrook School.  Each 29,000 square foot building provides accommodations for thirty-six students in double and single-bed rooms and four faculty members in multi-bedroom apartments.  A spacious common room on each floor creates a space for group activities and studying.  The design allows for convenient monitoring of the student areas, while simultaneously providing privacy for the faculty and their families.

The brick, stone, and wood material palette of the new dormitories reflects the architecture of the original buildings on campus and echoes the vernacular structures of the Berkshires.  The slate roofs with copper gutters and snow guards are designed for longevity as well as material richness.

Both Kravis House and Mayer House are sited at the top of a hill with extraordinary views of the Deerfield Valley.  The loggia that wraps around the dormitories provides a space from which to enjoy this view.  The student rooms are warm and spacious with extensive glass for natural lighting.  The faculty apartments are designed to feel like a home, complete with private porches and wood-burning fireplaces.
