Project: Macy/Flagler/Halsted Dorm Renovation
Location: Deerfield, MA

Eaglebrook School contacted Windigo to improve three of the student dormitories on its campus. The original 1960s dormitories recalled an army-barrack aesthetic out of character with the school and offered very poor energy performance.

After conducting a thorough analysis of the buildings, it was found that only the core and roof structures were still usable. The mechanical, plumbing, and electrical systems were no longer effective, and the exterior walls, windows and doors provided barely any thermal insulation.

Windigo’s design began with the reconstruction of the buildings’ facades. By integrating spray foam insulation into the walls and installing thermally efficient windows, the energy efficiency and comfort of the dorms greatly improved.

The biggest challenge of the project was that all three buildings would need to be renovated during summer break – a period of only 90 days!

The renovated dormitories have had a positive resonance on the campus and cut the school’s energy bills by 45%. The redesign also improved the students’ quality of life by providing light and spacious common rooms and a more welcoming entry. The design is modest and in the language of the school’s original architecture, reinforcing the school’s sense of place and improving the buildings’ presence on campus.
