BERNARDSVILLE, NJ
The juxtaposition of old and new was the inspiration behind the successful integration of rustic 19th century charm and late 20th century convenience in this New Jersey residence. The original structure, built in the 1840's as a horse barn, was expanded multiple times with additions dating from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Windigo transformed approximately twenty-nine dark, cramped rooms into fourteen light and open showplaces of contemporary lifestyles. The new addition continues the character of the existing house in a playful way by using traditional materials and details with new forms.
Wooden door panels were replaced with glass to flood the living spaces with light and provide views of the property’s park-like setting. The original barn was transformed into a dining room with exposed timbers and wide-planked floors. Windigo redesigned the family room, adding a spacious cathedral ceiling with clerestory and dormer windows, inlaid hardwood floors, removable theater seats and a unique stone fireplace.
