CHASE LEARNING CENTER

An independent school’s historic main classroom building was in need of modern improvements to reduce energy demands, facilitate contemporary teaching methods, and handle overcrowded classrooms.

The design task emphasized respect for the aesthetic character and symbolic meaning of the existing Learning Center structure, a 1965 Architect’s Collaborative design. Windigo’s updates to the building featured careful interventions to preserve the character of the original design while creating spaces for 21st-century learning. In addition to the architectural renovations, Windigo upgraded the building’s infrastructure for improved air quality, technology integration, new audio-visual capabilities, and display areas for student work.

Because this renovation would take several years to complete, the School needed classroom spaces during construction. Windigo developed a five-year master plan that included reconditioning existing buildings for temporary use. Coordination with local building officials and special permitting allowed the school to phase the project for minimal disruption to the academic calendar. The Learning Center renovations occurred over 90-day “Summer Slams” in consecutive years.
